We have 30 years experience with the dachshund breed and feel they are a wonderful little dog that is full of personality.
Dachshunds are very loving dogs and like to be close to you yet at the same time they tend to be very independant, some can be stubborn, but they are all very smart. If you are consistant with housetraining they will have no problem learning. There is no sex better than the other, males are just as loving as females and tend to be more happy-go-lucky in personality.
Dachshunds do well with buddies and having more than one can be addicting as they pair well with each other and love the companionship if you happen to be away from home and fear they may get lonely. Most times they prefer to cuddle up with each other rather than having their own bed to sleep in, or they will gladly share your space in bed and take more than their share of your pillow.
They do require attention from you or a companion of their own and they are very social with each member of the family, not choosing just one to love but will be more than happy to own the family as a whole.
Dachshunds were born to hunt so don't be surprised to find little surprises on your doorstep if your yard has its fair share of wild rabbits, birds, squirrels or baby moles. This is a common trait in the dachshund and if you feel you cannot handle that aspect of their personality then the dachshund is not for you.
